Fernleigh Mansion was built by Edward Clark in 1856 on the property called Apple Hill. It took four years to build and had beautiful stonework and woodwork. Edward and his family spent many winters in Europe and Fernleigh was their summer home for twenty-three years.

In 1882 Edward Clark died and left the estate to his son, Alfred Corning Clark.
