Pomeroy Place was a wedding gift to
Ann Cooper and her husband, George
Pomeroy, from Ann’s father, Judge Cooper. The house
which was built at the corner of
Main and River Streets, was the first
stone house constructed in the village
of Cooperstown. The unusual way the
stones were laid in the herring-bone
style, make the house unique. Under the eastern
gable of the house, a spread eagle,
the date of the building, and initials
were engraved into the stone. The bride
and groom’s initials were entwined to
make their union permanent. This proved to
be true because they had ten children
and lived there happily for many years.
